The Mesabi Ranches lot is located 20 kms NW of Nanton, Alberta on the edge of the beautiful foothills of the Rocky Mountains.  This is the location of the original homestead of the Sears Family.   Mike and Jo Sears make their home here.

Mesabi operates as a back grounding feedlot for Sears Ranches.  Approximately 5000 head of weaned calves are placed between August and December each fall.  The calves are given vaccinations, ID tags, and put on a light feeding ration consisting of silage and grain.  The calves are sorted by weights periodically over the winter and the heavier calves are moved onto a higher grain ration, which starts them on the road to what is known as a finished animal (ready to be marketed for slaughter).  The lighter calves are kept on the back grounding ration until summer and are then moved out onto grass.

The weigh sorting process continues when the cattle are on grass.  When the grass cattle reach the target weight they are sorted and moved to Chinook Feeders and placed on a grain ration until they are ready for market.

The Mesabi Ranches lot employs a fulltime cattle manager, fulltime feedmanager, and 2 livestock techs.  Housing is available on site at the Mesabi Ranches Lot.
